America's Poet Laureate

There's a wonderful article/interview in the July 13, 2009 Newsweek (p 63) about Kay Ryan. She's the Poet Laureate of the United States. It briefly chronicles her, at first reluctant, journey to publication. That in itself was interesting and full of the rejection pitfalls that many aspiring writers endure. Also covered are some of her published works and how she became Poet Laureate.

But it's her poetry itself that is so stimulating, and thought provoking.

Tenderness and Rot

Tenderness and Rot
share a border.
And rot is an
aggressive neighbor
whose iridescence
keeps creeping over.

No lessons
can be drawn
from this however.

One is not
two countries.
One is not meat
corrupting.

It is important
to stay sweet
and loving.

Ryan started with the self publishing route, then moved to small presses, finally graduating to "a major trade house. . . the poet whose first work was self-published commands poetry's biggest platform."

An interesting read about one writer's journey.

That is inspirational. Someday when my book is a blockbuster movie, I'm going to do an interview about starting out with small presses and then...then the fan buses are going to drive by my house. LOL

I'll get on that bus, and see how your weeding's going! :)

Kay Ryan's story is an inspirational one for sure! I do not have much time to look around your blog now but I am thrilled to see this mention of Ryan. Her poetry, while layered, greets even the most simplistic of readers through gentle imagery and truthful, thought-provoking matters.
btw- I hope to follow your blog right through til production of this killer blockbuster!!
keep grindin', you'll get there!! somethings take longer than we want but there is nothing we are incapable of...

Ryan is a HIGHLY gifted poet. Her words are beautifully strung. I really love reading her poems.

As for checking out the blog, you're more than welcome. You stumbled across one of my more enlightened posts. There are a few interspersed, (check out the posts on Robert and Shana Parkeharrison or Bill Shannon) but as the title suggests, I don't usually get too deep here.

The post before this one was The Mouse Disposal Saga of a Reformed Horror Flick Junkie, and today's post is footage of a yodeling dominatrix.

If you're into motorcycles, sea monkeys, how to thwart the Jehovah's Witnesses when they continually haunt your doorstep, conspiracy theories on the contagious properties of redneck, and trying to fit in time to write in between, then you've found your Mecca. If not, I do showcase different artist once in a while because, really, how long can you discuss Hong Kong Phooey and El Kabong?

Glad you stopped by and chimed in. Hope to see you around. Door's always open!
