What Songs Do You Turn Up?

There are certain songs you just have to play loud. Ones you wish you could turn all the way up to eleven. Here are a few of my favorite songs to jam - in no particular order.

Who Are You - The Who
Got My Mojo Working - Muddy Waters
Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet
Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Love Struck Baby - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Nessa Dorma - Luciano Pavarotti
Institutionalized - Suicidal Tendencies
Been Caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction (Though, this is tied with Coming Down The Mountain)
When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
Shadow of the Season - Screaming Trees
Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix
Higher Ground - RHCP cover

Honorable Mention
Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones
A Little Less Conversation - Elvis
Bad Girls - Donna Summer
Even Flow - Pearl Jam
Bitch Better Have My Money - Amg (I hang my head in shame, but I can't deny enjoying this song.)

There are a lot more on my list, but I figured I wouldn't share them all. Leave an air of mystery surrounding me. So, give. What songs make your arm have that involuntary reaction to turn up the volume as soon as you hear them? I promise not to tease you, even if it's Tunes by Englebert Humperdink to Hum in the Shower.

Having worked in the music biz for many years, I never listen to music now because it reminds me of work. In the 80s and 90s I played the Cars when I wanted to clean. They have very bouncy cheerful songs. Along with not listening to music now, I try to clean as little as possible. ;)

Screaming Trees...did they do that song, "Nearly Lost You?" Dig that tune...

Two songs I turn up no matter what are Simple Minds' "Promised You a Miracle" and (much) more recently, Big Data's "Dangerous." (Heart that sleazy bassline!!!) Duran Duran gets turned up de facto--gotta do it. Blondie, too.

Someday, when I get my neo-dark-wave band together (composed of middle-agers into Depeche Mode, just like me) I want to cover that Elvis tune you mention (Gawd, don't we all need a little more love and a little less conversation???). (OK, maybe that's just me, but GAWD!!!) ;-)

@Pat- I will not tease you for your head-hanging one. (at least not for 2 years, then all bets are off.)

@Andrea- I know, I could go on and on with this list. Nice choices. I esp. like the Led Zep one. Yeah, guys usually are impressed by my musical tastes for some reason. Weird. lol!

@Lexa- lol! You and me both! I like happy bouncy songs. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes have some really good ones. Like "Home".

@Mina- Blondie and Duran Duran for sure! That cover would rock!! And yeah, we all do!

How much do I love the fact that Pavarotti is on your list? Just, so awesome.

My crank-it-up list includes Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, and Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as Rob Zombie/White Zombie.

And maybe...Do You Hear The People Sing from Les Mis. And everything else in that musical.

This one goes to 11 - Tim and I still say that, today.

Great movie.

Happy New Week!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is my turn it all the way up song. Probably a few others.

Can't say I have any that I turn up the volume on. I'm always telling my kids to turn down the volume. They like that new Beyoncé stuff and Fifth Harmony.

I always turn up 30 Seconds to Mars and 90's music. :)

Yeah! Those are some great songs. :)

I have been immersed in my protagonist's favorite songs for a few months now. Her current favorites are "The Everclear Song" by Roger Creager and "So What" by P!NK. She cranks those up as loud as they'll go :)

So many!!! I love a ton on your list - would add most of the songs by the Doobies at the first part of summer too :)

What a fun post. I second Pearl Jam and my AC/DC choice is You Shook Me All Night Long. Also adding Why Can't I Be You by The Cure, Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, Jump Around by House of Pain, Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode. Now I will be thinking of more the rest of the day LOL.

Anything by Queen :-)

@MJ Yes! And Master of the House. Definitely.

@Ivy- I love all their mockumentaries. But Spinal Tap is classic.

@Susan- There are many an 80s pop song I would turn up to 11. :)

@Sherry- Not even any classical pieces like the overture to Carmen? or Montagues and Capulets theme? I'm shocked! ;D

@Chrys- Good one!!

@Christine- Thanks!

@Carol- It's so cool when our protagonists have their own playlists.

@Jemi- Oooh! The Doobie Brothers. Nice!!

@Julie- All good ones! Especially Jump Around. You can't NOT turn that up!

@Randi- YES!! Freddie Mercury was AMAZING!!!

It depends on the day - sometimes it's "My Lighthouse" by Rend Collective, sometimes it's "Monster" by Skillet, and sometimes it's jazz by Dizzy Gillespie.

Songs that I turn up loud.... there are a bunch of 'em. I agree about anything Queen. That should always be played LOUD.

Have you heard the Good Morning Vietnam soundtrack? It has bits of Robin Williams DJing and introducing the songs. One of the things he says is, "Play anything. Just play it LOUD."

Well, that inspired me to find the soundtrack on YouTube. All of the Adrien bits are hilarious and worth listening to... and the person who posted the record was kind enough to break it down to the second. But, the one to which I'm referring begins at the 9:26 mark. Just play it loud!

Ray of Light by Madonna --That's the first one that comes to mind, but I know there are others. I'm terrible at keeping track of names, but you do have to just blast the music and unwind sometimes, eh?

Loni Townsend said...

Heh. Most of my stuff spawns from either a book playlist (AWOLNATION - Sail or Imagine Dragons - Radioactive) or something popular that makes me think of my husband (Walk The Moon - Shut Up and Dance or Andy Grammer - Honey, I'm Fine). Sometimes it's both (Pitbull - Timber). Writing and my husband... I suppose you can tell where my passion lies. ;)

That's quite a combination you have there. I do enjoy Nessum Dorma very much, no matter which tenor sings it. Pavarotti is one of my favorites.

Liz Blocker said...

your list is WAY cooler than mine. Mine makes me sound seriously dorky. Just as an example, I've always had a closet love for Toto's Africa.

See? super dork.

Ava Quinn said...

@Tyrean- Nice ones! Especially Dizzy Gillespie. When I Get Low I Get High by Ella Fitzgerald is another "11" song for me from that era.

@Robin- Yes! That is a fantastic soundtrack! And the Adrien bits were hilarious. :)

@Crystal- Absolutely! No 2 ways about it!

@Loni- As it TOTALLY should!! ;D

@Al- Yes, I have many classical pieces I turn up to 11. The Gypsy Song from the opera Carmen doesn't start at 11. But it ends there! Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZlUEo-L6qQ

@Liz- No it isn't! I even said I wouldn't tease. And I like Roseanna by Toto. Plus they will forever be cool because they did the soundtrack to Dune. So you're totally in!!

It's interesting to see the variety! There are few 80s songs I turn up anymore because I've heard them so often! Lately I seem to turn up the radio every time Shut Up + Dance by Walk the Moon comes on. I love that song!!!

100% yes to Thunderstruck. Then again, I turn up everything. Hearing loss never sounded so good.
